Be Aware of The Rise in City and County Labor Law Posting Requirements

We talk a lot about federal and state labor law posting requirements at PosterGuard.com. But did you know your posting responsibilities drill down even further to city and county levels? That’s right! Now, if you have business locations in certain cities or counties, you must display additional employee postings.

This is a new trend in posting compliance, with a marked rise in the number of cities and counties requiring employers to post labor law notices. The postings cover a variety of employment laws similar to federal and state posters. What’s different, though, is that cities may choose to pass laws that are more generous to employees than under federal or state law. For example, a lot of cities have their own higher minimum wage, paid medical leave rules and different discrimination guidelines and protected characteristics (such as sexual orientation).

And to be clear: You must post these city posters in addition to the federal and state postings. So even if your city has a minimum wage poster and the minimum wage is higher than the state or federal, you still have to display all the postings. The laws may cover different employees and the legal differences may be subtle, but you must post all three versions even if they seem to conflict.

Here are some of the more recent local postings you may require for total posting compliance:

  • Albuquerque, NM – Minimum wage poster
  • Ann Arbor, MI – Living wage poster (city contractors)
